MXR DynaComp
MXR DynaComp
The Dynamcomp is one of the most widely used compression boxes on the market. It’s vintage models sell for amazingly high numbers to collectors, but its usefulness in the horn world might be limited. While it is simple to use and a staple on many classic guitar albums, the pedal might change your sound and dynamic range negatively.

Interface: 4/5
Like any two knob pedal, this thing is super simple. The sensitivity knob can be a confusing label for someone unfamiliar with the finer points of compression
Noise: 1/5
This pedal has an loud “bacon sizzle”, common in many compression pedals. That can be other than desirable.
Live application: 1/5
This pedal’s effect on your sound will be limiting. The compression ratios in this pedal will make your dynamic rage much smaller. There is not a lot of subtlety in this pedal.

"Not only have I been using the MXR Dyna Comp for 4 years, it is literally a permanent fixture on my board and ON ALL THE TIME. This pedal is magical for me. I have placed my compression after all of my tone altering effects and before the EQ, delay, and reverb. I know that most guitarists will put a compression pedal early in their pedal chain, but for me having it later in the chain after my tone altering effects is perfect as it allows me to control the output strength of the prior effects. This is a major advantage to me as distortion, overdrive and envelope signals are very temperamental when using a microphone input. The MXR compressor has allowed me to tame those beasts. I don’t find that compression removes my ability to alter the dynamics of my playing. I can still naturally alter my dynamics as I would acoustically. The compression really ensures that my ‘effected’ sound is consistent with each pedal and combinations that I choose. I have it set at the lowest settings, so the result is subtle. The compression combined with a slight boost from EQ and some reverb gives me the best clean sound as well. Before I added compression my clean sound less full and could be thin. The compression really beefs up my clean sound and gives it lots of presence. For the purpose in which I use this pedal, for me it is PERFECT."
